The Sylva Indonesia National Gathering 2012

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – The Sylva Indonesia National Gathering 2012 took place on November 16-18, 2012 in the Gunung Walat University Forest.

Sylva Indonesia or the Indonesian Forestry Student Association is an organization of forestry students who have been established since 1959. In 2012, Sylva Indonesia held a National Gathering event in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF).

Participants who took part in the 2012 National Gathering were representatives of Sylva Indonesia members from all over Indonesia, totalling 68 people from 29 universities. The National Gathering activities began with a discussion with Prof. Hariadi Kartodihardjo (Professor of Forestry Policy at the Faculty of Forestry of IPB) and Ir. Sumarto, MM (Head of the Public Relations Center of the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia) with the moderator Secretary General of Sylva Indonesia, Ahmad Arief Hilman.

The theme that was carried out in this discussion was “The Facts of the Failure of Indonesian Forest Management, and How the Solution to Fix the Thinking in Forest Management”. Also present as the speaker, Mr. Purwadi Soeprihanto (Executive Director of the Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association) who explained a lot about the condition of forestry in the present and provided suggestions, especially for the government to protect forestry business nationally.

After the first discussion session, continued discussions with the Executive Director of GWUF, Ir. Budi Prihanto, MS with the theme “Innovation in Sustainable Management of Educational Forests”. In this discussion, examples of GWUF cases (which are Forest Areas with Special Purposes such as education and training) are able to innovate and manage forests sustainably so as to become a successful example of small-scale forest management.

In the 2012 National Gathering, a National Working Meeting (Rakernas) was held to discuss Sylva Indonesia’s work program for the next 2 years.
