Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – The summit event of Belantara 2012 of Department of Silviculture Faculty of Forestry IPB took place on November 24-25, 2012 in Gunung Walat University Forest.

This summit of the Belantara in the Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) was attended by 58 participants, those are the 48th batch of Silvicultural students (entered IPB in 2011), 66 committee members, 20 senior students, and several lecturers including Prof. Nurheni Wijayanto, Dr. Sri Wilarso, Dr. Basuki Wasis, Dr. Cahyo Wibowo and 6 staff.

The Belantara event began 3 months ago at IPB Dramaga Campus and the activity at GWUF was the closing ceremony of Belantara and as an event for students to share with each other and to learn more about silviculture, silvicultural benefits, etc” said Agung Wahyu Hidayat as Chair of the 2012 Wilderness Committee.

Belantara 2012 was held at GWUF (managed by the Faculty of Forestry IPB) suppose to introduce 48th batch students to The Faculty of Forestry of IPB and GWUF as a place that has a very important role in education and research and provides inspiration for students because GWUF is a successful model of small-scale forest management. The event also aims to introduce more about the Department of Silviculture Student Professional Association (Himpro), that is Tree Grower Community (TGC), which is a forum for students to conduct organizational activities and community service. Currently, the chairperson of the TGC is Arya Panji Wicaksono, from 46th batch of Silviculture student.

Activities held during the Belantara included discussion and hospitality throughout the academic community of the Department of Silviculture, explanation of GWUF, and tracking which is a simulation of 3 laboratories in Silviculture, those are ecology, protection, and silviculture. When tracking is held for practical material such as the use of GPS (Global Positioning System), tree diameter measurement, simulating forest fires so that it is known that how fires in the forest occur not due to friction of trees or natural factors or cigarette but rather caused by factor of human intentions, taught also forest cultivation materials such as planting pine seedlings and mangrove seedlings.

“Thank God, Belantara runs smoothly, safely, and without any unexpected things happen. OF course, this is inseparable from good cooperation with colleagues in GWUF,  we hope that cooperation with the Silvicultural Department, in particular, can be established even better and students can get even greater benefits”, said Prof. Nurheni Wijayanto as Head of the Department of Silviculture.

“From the chat with students, they were very happy with Belantara activities in GWUF and the Department of Silviculture was the only department in the Faculty of Forestry IPB which gave students the opportunity to get to know GWUF early so as to provide insight into the foresters candidates. Thank you and best wishes for Gunung Walat University Forest” added Prof. Nurheni Wijayanto.
