Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Field Study of the Biology Study Program of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of IPB students was held on June 24-26, 2014 in Gunung Walat University Forest, Sukabumi.
Field study (SL) with BIO301 Course code and 2 credits is one of the curricular activities in the Biology Science Undergraduate Program which conducted in the field. This SL activity was a form of research that includes working in the field and would be continued with working in the laboratory if needed. The activities would be continued with data analysis, report preparation, presentation (seminars) results, examinations, and submission of reports.
In this SL, students would work in small groups (consisting of 3-4 people) to do one research topic guided by a lecturer from Department of Biology of FMIPA, IPB. The small research was intended to limit the scope of special work in each group’s work so that activities become more focused and optimal for the work effectiveness. In addition, students could find out what each group was doing through the SL results seminar which ought to be followed by all student participants.
With this SL activity, it was expected that Biology undergraduate students can apply the basic concepts of biology, the introduction, and management of biodiversity. In addition, this activity was also expected to be a good media to hold an integrated work involving all laboratories in the Biology Department of IPB FMIPA and to establish good communication among students, lecturers, and all members of the department.
Field studies were intentionally conducted on a short semester by utilizing the academic holiday time so that the preparation and implementation did not interfere the teaching and learning activities in the laboratory environment or in the class. Field study activities were attended by all Biology Undergraduate students who had completed the fourth semester so that students had learned enough about the basic concepts of biology as a provision in the implementation of this SL.
