The Student Field Study Program of the Biology Department of IPB

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – The Student Field Study Program of the Biology Department of IPB has taken place in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) on June 29 – July 1, 2011.

This Field Study was attended by 100 Biology students and 20 lecturers. The coordinator of this field study is Dr. Achmad Farajallah.

Field study is part of the Biology curriculum, namely BIO301 – Field Study with 2 (0-6) credit. In KRS (credit study system), this course is included in semester V, but it is held on holidays between semesters IV and V. The idea of this curriculum is to unite several practicums from several courses related to the field or more popularly referred to as “joint field trip”. Therefore, every subject lecturer makes a topic to be practised in the field.

Most lecturers make topics related to various sampling technique such as microorganisms, plants and animals, and sample preservation techniques in the field. The study then continued by working in the laboratory such as morphological analysis and biological material testing to molecular analysis. In addition, some lecturers also made field research topics, such as in situ physiology analysis, animal behaviour, profiling of tree to various ecological parameters.

“With this Field Study, it is expected that Biology undergraduate students can apply basic biological concepts in working in the field and gain basic knowledge in the introduction and management of biodiversity, “said Dr. Achmad Farajallah
