Comparative Study of Forest Areas with Special Purpose (KHDTK) by Staff of BBPBPTH Yogyakarta

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Comparative Study of Forest Areas with Special Purpose (KHDTK) by Staff of BBPBPTH Yogyakarta took place on 3-4 December, 2012, in Gunung Walat University Forest.

Comparative studies were conducted in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) because GWUF which is designated as KHDTK is known for its success in managing forests sustainably so that it is used as a model for small-scale forest management. This is what makes the Center for Forest Plant Biotechnology and Breeding Research (BBPBPTH) Yogyakarta send 2 of their staff to study KHDTK in GWUF. To be noted that BBPBPTH Yogyakarta also manages 5 KHDTK in the Yogyakarta area.

Comparative studies begin with presentations and discussions about GWUF by Dr. Gunawan Santosa (Director of Forest Resources Utilization of GWUF) and Dr. Tatang Tiryana (Director of GWUF Planning and Research). The location of this discussion was held at the Headquarters of GWUF in the Building of the Faculty of Forestry, IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor.

The discussion focused on the problems of KHDTK institutions and seedlings that there are still many obstacles.

After the discussion at the IPB Dramaga Campus, it continued to the review of the location of GWUF forests directly in Sukabumi and followed by discussions with GWUF Manager, Dizy Rizal, and Assistant Manager of GWUF, Adly Rahardian Lubis, S.Hut. After the discussions, tracking was also carried out into the forest and exploring natural karst caves in the GWUF area.

“From this visit, we were able to learn a lot about managing KHDTK well. If it is necessary, we can imitate the things that we see in the field, especially the independence of KHDTK management. GWUF has changed a lot towards a positive direction such as the addition of more representative facilities for tourism and education” said Ir. Dodi Garnadi, M.Sc.

“There are so many benefits of visiting this place. In the KHDTK forest area, in accordance with our duties and functions, we are making superior seeds by creating good cultivar that has bigger more value compared to common one” said Fasis Mangkuwibowo, S.Hut.

“In addition to this comparative study, we also want exploring cooperation, perhaps in GWUF we can build seed garden research plots which will produce superior seeds” explained Fasis Mangkuwibowo, S.Hut.
