A review of the location of forest fires by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry of IPB and its staff

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – A review of the location of forest fires by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry of IPB and its staff has taken place on 8-9 September 2012 in the Gunung Walat University Forest.

To be known that there have been forest fires in some areas of Gunung Walat University Forest covering an area of 3.7 ha on September 1, 2012 (read the news here). This forest fire had become a viral news that adorned local and national newspapers and national television.

Looking at the high attention by the community and the impact of the fires, made the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Bambang Hero Sahardjo, and several lecturers related to the forest fire science need to review the location of the fire directly.

The Faculty of Forestry lecturers who accompanied the Dean in reviewing the location of the fire included Dr. Naresworo Nugroho, who is also the vice dean, Dr. Lailan Syaufina, Dr. Tatang Tiryana, and Dr. Gunawan Santosa.

Before reviewing the location of the fire, a discussion was held with the Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) to explore thoroughly the forest fires. From this discussion, steps were taken to anticipate the possibility of forest fires in the future. Some of these steps are fire control training to GWUF staff in collaboration with the Manggala Agni Team of the Ministry of Forestry, provision of adequate blackout infrastructure, provision of notice boards, and warnings in fire-prone locations.

Fire locations can also be used as student research to calculate ecological and economic impacts caused by a fire. A site review is conducted in the morning until noon. The location on the hillside with a fairly heavy terrain did not dampen the steps of the Dean group accompanied by GWUF staff to trace the former fire area.

“Review of this location to ascertain what kind of fire occurred in GWUF, to verify and ensure the confusion of the news so far. After this, there will be a follow-up to fire control measures such as training in preparing infrastructure and building safer areas. As leaders, we ensure everything that happens and take what solutions will be done next” said Prof. Dr. Bambang Hero Sahardjo.
