Comparative study of the Makassar Forestry Research Institute

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Comparative study of the Makassar Forestry Research Institute took place on 7-8 November 2012 in Gunung Walat University Forest.

Coordination and consultation are conducted in the Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) because GWUF is one of the Forests with Special Purpose (KHDTK) which is known for its success in managing forests sustainably so that it is used as a model for small-scale forest management. In addition, GWUF is also the forest that is used as the object of research. There are approximately 200 titles of research have been produced in GWUF both in the form of theses, theses, dissertations, reports, scientific papers, etc. from 1975 to 2012.

Those things encouraged the Makassar Forestry Research Institute (BPK) to send 5 employees to study forest management in GWUF. The Makassar Forestry Research Institute also managed 3 KHDTKs at once, where the KHDTK was designated and established by the Minister of Forestry as a field media to conduct forestry research and development activities.

“To add information, insight, and knowledge share, we conducted a comparative study on GWUF. According to information from the website and also fellow researchers in Makassar who participated in field trips in the previous GWUF, it was informed that the management of GWUF has been carried out with the principle of sustainability “, said Ir. Turbanimunda, Head of Research Facilities Section, Makassar Forestry Research Institute, who led this group.

The consultation began with a presentation and discussion on GWUF by Dr. Gunawan Santosa, Dr. Nandi Kosmaryandi, Dr. Cahyo Wibowo, and Dr. Tatang Tiryana. The location of this discussion was the Headquarters of GWUF in the Building of the Faculty of Forestry, IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor. The discussion was much focused on forestry problems that occurred in Makassar related to the Makassar Forestry Research Institute. The results of this discussion gave ideas and innovations in order to try to reduce the problems that occurred there, especially in relation to communities around the forest. After the discussion at the IPB Campus, the event continued to the observation of the location of GWUF forests in Sukabumi, West Java and the second session of discussion.

At the second session, discussions at GWUF Sukabumi were accompanied by GWUF Manager, Dizy Rizal; Assistant Manager, Adly Rahardian and; several GWUF staff.

In addition to the discussion, there was also a direct observation in the field to review and find out more about the use of pine resin, agathis latex, and its innovations to increase production, review agroforestry locations as a result of cooperation between GWUF and surrounding communities, review voluntary carbon trading locations from cooperation between GWUF and several companies in and overseas. At the end of the visit, BPK staff also explored the natural karst caves in the GWUF area.

“From the review in the field, especially empowerment program for communities around the forest such as tapping pine and agathis, is very significant and beneficial for the community around GWUF so we hope to adapt activities that are done in GWUF. In the future, we will apply it to the Makassar Forestry Research Institute. An interesting thing is that not only empower forest communities, GWUF also cooperates with external parties including TOSO, ConocoPhillips, and NYK Group which are truly very successful in voluntary carbon trading schemes”, explained Ir. Turbanimunda.

“GWUF presented good activities and ways of managing KHDTK. Based on the review in the field, we were very impressed and the managers in the field also helped us to the situation on the ground, see the activities of community empowerment, see the location of cooperation with the company, and see the implementation research that is being conducted by IPB students on GWUF, “added Ir. Turbanimunda.
