The study of conflict management and forest rehabilitation by chief candidates for the Forest Management Unit (KKPH) of Bogor Forestry Education and Training Center

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – The study of conflict management and forest rehabilitation by chief candidates for the Forest Management Unit (KKPH) of Bogor Forestry Education and Training Center took place on 21-23 October 2012 in the Gunung Walat University Forest.

The study of conflict management and forest rehabilitation was attended by 32 KKPH candidates from all over Indonesia. This activity was held by the Bogor Forestry Education and Training Center. This activity began with a presentation on GWUF as an example of successful small-scale forest management and discussions on conflict management and forest rehabilitation with GWUF Executive Director, Ir. Budi Prihanto, MS.

This discussion was seen alive because participants were enthusiastic about thoroughly examining the forest conflicts that occurred in their respective regions and finding solutions to overcome the conflict.

In GWUF there were also conflicts involving the surrounding communities, but the GWUF management was able to overcome the conflict by managing the surrounding community with empowerment and other methods so that the conflict tends to be small.

The knowledge about conflict management that can be adopted by forest area managers in other places which of course also adjust to the conditions and culture of the surrounding community.

During their time in GWUF, KKPH participants reviewed and discussed directly with the surrounding community, especially about the role and benefits of the existence of GWUF on the community, and so on. The results of discussions with the community were then discussed again between participants to exchange information about the conflicts that emerged in the community towards forest areas and how to overcome them. This discussion was also guided by Dr. Kusdamayanti and Ir. Samsudi, M.Sc from the Forestry Education and Training Center Bogor.

Not only conflict management and forest rehabilitation, but forest management was also studied including observing the use of pine and agathis latex, the way of tapping, storage, economic and social value because tappers are communities around GWUF, research innovations to increase the production of latex, and so on.

Participants also observed agroforestry sites managed by local communities in the GWUF area such as cardamom, coffee, bananas, pineapple and so on. In addition, participants also observed the location of tree planting as a result of cooperation between GWUF and companies in the “voluntary carbon trading” scheme. The companies involved include TOSO Company Limited Japan, TOSO Industry Indonesia, NYK Group Japan, and ConocoPhillips Indonesia.

“This event is conducted in GWUF because there are quite a complete forest management activities, conflict management, rehabilitation and activities. This activity will provide supplies to prospective KKPH how to manage the forest so that it is productive but environmentally friendly, socially friendly, by taking into account ecological aspects “, said Ir. Samsudi, M.Sc, who is leading the study activities at this GWUF.
