Practices of seed source by Bogor Forestry Education and Training Center

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Practices of seed source by Bogor Forestry Education and Training Center took place on 7-8 November 2013 in Gunung Walat University Forest, Sukabumi.

This event was attended by 30 participants from Kabupaten offices which is in charge of forestry and forest plant seeding centre throughout Indonesia.

“In this training, we focus on the class of seed source to identified wood seed, selected wood seed, and seed production areas,” said the lecturer from Bogor Forestry Education and Training Center, Ir. Samsudi, M.Sc, when met at the location of the event.

According to him, the reason for the training of seed sources at Gunung Walat was because there were still several types of stands such as agathis, puspa, and pine so that it became the right learning place for the training participants to be correct in assessing the seed source.

“The first activity is identification, where participants do a quick tour in order to determine the location of the source of the seed can be accepted or rejected, then the data collection will be continued from every location of seed source” he said.

He explained that from the identification activity, there were 6 important things that must be known, they are accessibility, flowering, fertilization, plant quality, security, and health. After these points were fulfilled, there would be a discussion for decision making to determine whether or not the location of the seed source was received.

“Because in the decision to reject or accept a seed source location requires a strong understanding” he explained.

Mr. Samsudi added that after training in Gunung Walat, it would be continued with the practice in Sumedang for the types of mahogany, acacia, and pine gardens.
