Comparative Study of Faculty of Forestry, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Comparative Study of Faculty of Forestry, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta took place on May 13-14, 2016 in Gunung Walat University Forest, Sukabumi.

Comparative studies were attended by representatives from lecturers of Faculty of Forestry UGM and Director of Wanagama Educational Forest, UGM. At first, the delegation of the UGM Faculty of Forestry came to IPB Faculty of Forestry in Dramaga, Bogor and was welcomed by the Vice Dean I of IPB Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Naresworo Nugroho and Vice Dean II of IPB Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Ir. Lailan Syaufina, M.Sc.

After discussing at the IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor, the group then headed to Gunung Walat Universiy Forest, Sukabumi and was welcomed by Dr. Gunawan Santosa, MS as Director of Forest Resource Utilization of GWUF.

“The purpose of this comparative study is that to get information sharing and to share experiences from managers, especially from IPB, how we manage Wanagama Education Forest so that it can be independent and well-managed” said Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation of UGM Faculty of Forestry, Teguh Yuwono, S. Hut, M.Sc when met at the location of the activity.

According to Teguh Yuwono, the forest management system that had been applied by Gunung Walat was pretty good. The evidence was from the dense and lush stand.

“What I see here are extraordinary about where GWUF started from a critical land and now it has become a good forest” he said.

Teguh Yuwono added that the natural conditions on Gunung Walat can be maintained with the concept of zero-cutting which could still produce but not cutting down trees.

“I hope this can be one of the barometers for forest management in Indonesia in the future” closed Teguh Yuwono.
