Development of forest education by PT. Bukit Asam, Government of Kabupaten Muara Enim, and its Forestry Service

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Development of forest education by PT. Bukit Asam, Government of Kabupaten Muara Enim, and its Forestry Service took place on 9-10 August 2012 in Gunung Walat University Forest.

The background of the activity in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) was initiated by the collaboration of PT. Bukit Asam with the Faculty of Forestry IPB for reclamation of the former mining site of PT.BA in Kabupaten Muara Enim, South Sumatra which will be prepared as an educational forest. At the same time, PT. Bukit Asam and Government of Kabupaten Muara Enim and its Forestry Service are preparing the creation of the urban forest and the People’s Forest Park (Tahura) with an area of ,5300 Ha, so that the three institutions learn about sustainable forest management in GWUF which has been known for its success in forest development and management.

“PT. BA and Muara Enim Government visited to see the successfulness of Gunung Walat University Forest, a collaboration between Government and PT. BA will build Tahura Enim with 5,300 Ha of a conservation area and urban forest. And by doing cooperation with IPB, we can build an education forest” said Mr. Danang, who’s in charge of mining reclamation and post-mining handling of PT .BA.

“Local Government in collaboration with PT Bukit Asam, one of the biggest mining companies in Muara Enim is preparing urban forest development so we need to learn and see Gunung Walat University Forest. We hope that with this learning, we can see the management of education forest to be implemented in the education forest in Muara Enim” said Ir. Hasanuddin, M.Si, Assistant Mayor for Economic and Natural Resources, Kabupaten Muara Enim, South Sumatra.

“We have signed a MoU between IPB and PT BA which will be followed up by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry for various activities carried out for the construction of forests in ex-mines”, said Prof. Bambang Hero Sahardjo, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, IPB.

This activity was attended by 10 groups from the three agencies.

Activities held in GWUF included the presentation of GWUF by the Director of Business Development and Public Relations, Dr. Nandi Kosmaryandi, discussions with the Dean and forestry experts such as Dr. Basuki Wasis, Dr. Tatang Tiryana and Dr. Erianto Indra Putra, forest track, learning everything related to tapping agathis and pine sap, including its economic impact.

“We are very enthusiastic, besides greening it also produces economic value with the surrounding community, things like this will be implemented in Muara Enim. Experts from IPB can collaborate with us and implement it there for this Indonesia “, added Mr. Danang.

“We are very proud that there is a forest of education that is very good and has a social economic value for the surrounding community so that there are environmental benefits and impact on the surrounding community, I am glad it is not easy to make forests in the community that can grow well as it needs special attention to build forest like this” added Ir. Hasanuddin, M.Sc.
