Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Postgraduate courses field trip of Sustainable Landscape Management and Landscape Ecology Courses of IPB Faculty of Agriculture Department of Landscape Architecture took place on 1-2 June 2013 in Gunung Walat University Forest.
The field trip was attended by 21 postgraduate students from the Department of Landscape Architecture (ARL), 4 postgraduate students from the Department of Forest Resources Conservation (KSH), and 1 doctoral student. The lecturer who accompanied this field trip was Prof. Dr. Hadi Susilo Arifin, Dr. Regan Leonardus Kaswanto, and Dr. Syartinilia Wijaya.
“This field trip theme is ‘Harmonization between Cities and Villages’ not only visiting Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF), we also visit several other institutions in Bogor such as GG. House, Riung Gunung Tourist Area, Nusantara Flower Park, and Telaga Warna ”, said Rizki Alfian as the head of the field trip committee.
“The purpose of this field trip is to study 1) the landscape elements (both hard and soft) at the sites; 2) maintenance intensity; 3) land use and land cover; 4) social, cultural, biophysical, and environmental problems on each object; 5) large ongoing changes in land use or land cover and; 6) ongoing management and alternative management plans” explained Rizki Alfian.
“In the course of Sustainable Landscape Management, there is the term of ‘landscape services’. GWUF, in our opinion, is one of the interesting objects in providing the significant environmental services such as greening, the application of agroforestry concepts, the concept of the yard, and also the conservation of flora and fauna” added Rizki Alfian.
“The act of professional management is one of the advantages GWUF. It is proven that GWUF has cooperated with several major local and overseas institutions in managing GWUF so that the existence of GWUF is very functioning in some aspects, such as 1) Ecologically, GWUF still maintains its heterogeneity, as it is seen from the form of contours, plant planting, and some bird habitats found in Gunung Walat; 2) Economically, GWUF has managed to produce wood and sap as the income allocated for sustainable forest maintenance; 3) Socially, aside from being a means of education and research on the presence of GWUF, it can also stimulate the community to participate in the greening of the hills around Gunung Walat” explained Rizki Alfian.
