The visitation of JSPS (Japan Society for Promotion Science) Workshop

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – The visitation of JSPS (Japan Society for Promotion Science) Workshop on the second day was held in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) on Tuesday, November 16, 2010.

On the first day of the workshop, a seminar was held at Silva Pertamina Building, Faculty of Forestry, IPB with 18 speakers from Indonesia. There were 126 participants in this activity which are from Korea, Malaysia, Africa, and others.

The JSPS Workshop was a follow-up to the MoU between IPB and Kagoshima University, Japan in a research on bioresources and tropical forests for postgraduate students.

The workshop at GWUF began with a presentation and discussion about the successful management of GWUF by the Executive Director, Ir. Budi Prihanto, MS and continued by visiting the forest area and tapping sap location.

“The aims of (visitation to) GWUF is to find out the success stories in growing forests from initially empty land to become lush like today. This is clear evidence that if we are seriously developing forests, it will succeed” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Cecep Kusmana, MS. (Professor of the Department of Silviculture, Faculty of Forestry, IPB) who acted as Chair of the Organizing Community of JSPS Workshop of IPB-Kagoshima University.

“Besides, it also inspires the spirit of foresters who must never give up growing forests because with perseverance they can succeed even from an empty land” he said.

“Pepping up the spirit of foresters to conserve forest biological resources because forests are expensive so we will not easily damage the forest and actively study technology to build and manage forests well,” he added.
