Summer Course by International Collaboration Office (IPB)

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Summer Course  by International Collaboration Office (IPB) has been conducted from 1-3 October 2012  in GWUF.

International Collaboration Office or IPB  Office for International Cooperatioon, in this year (2012) has conducted summer course in Indonesia for students from Indoesia and foreign countries. In this occasion, there were 4 topics of summer course , namely 1. Suistainable tropical agriculture, 2. Tropical ecology and biodiversity, 3. Primate conservation biology and health, 4. Introduction to tropical biodiversity from forest to the sea.

For this year of  2012, only the topic “Introduction to tropical biodiversity from forest to the sea” which was conducted, one of its agenda was carried out in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF).

In general, the activities of summer course with the topic Introduction to tropical biodiversity from forest to the sea, comprises among other things, training on Indonesian culture and language, lectures on tropical biodiversity by IPB teaching staff, field work,  laboratory practices, and bird watching and banding.

The objectives of the summer course were introducing the culture and language of Indonesia (with the hope that it could support the government program to make Indonesian language as one of the international languages), introducing biodiversity of Indonesian flora and fauna, and introducing the importance of biodiversity maintenance in Indonesia ” said Mr. Ajen Mukarom, coordinator of the Summer Course Program of  2012.

Summer course of this year 2012 was followed by 11 participants (students)  from Hongaria, Mali, Sudan, Serbia, Pakistan,  and  Madagascar. Activities in Gunung Walat University Forest were followed by 4 students (2 Hongarian, 1 Mali, and 1 Sudan students) because the other participants had other agenda. Activities in Gunung Walat University Forest were accompanied by IPB teaching staffs, who were among others Dr. Yenny A Mulyani, Dr. Majariana Krisanti, Dr. Tatang Tiryana (Director of GWUF for Planning and Development), Dr. Cahyo Wibowo (Director of GWUF for Forest Resources Development) , and 3 IPB students.

Activities being conducted in GWUF were among others introduction and discussion on natural resources  possessed by GWUF and its management, wildlife survey (for among others mammals, bird, amphibian, aquatic biota, etc), introduction on the utilization of non forest products (such as pine resin, agathis resin), and exploration of karst cave while also learning the aquatic biota within the cave.

“In the river Cipereu in GWUF, and in the karst cave of GWUF, there were lots of unique aquatic biota which constitute great biodiversity richness.  Hopefully in the future, this will contribute more to the education mission of GWUF” said Dr. Majariana Krisanti , who acted as instructor on tropical biodiversity in this summer course, and also works as teaching staff at Department of Aquatic Resources Management , Faculty of Fishery and Marine Sciences of IPB.
