Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Short course on stable isotopes in ecohydrology and plant ecology has been conducted on 1-2 December 2012 in GWUF.

This short course was followed by 19 participants from Goettingen University, Bogor Agricultural University, and Center of Plant Conservation (PKT / Bogor Botanical Garden / Indonesian Institute of Sciences / LIPI).

The topic materials of the short course comprise among others Isotope basics and usefulness, applications (stable isotopes in ecohydrology and plant ecology), case study (the water cycle in a tropical tree plantation: what happens underground?), case study (use of stable water isotopes in water vapour), and computer utilization (multiple source modeling software).

The trainers in this short course were Dr. Luitgard Schwendenmann (Senior Lecturer at the School of Environment, The University of Auckland, New Zealand), Dr. Michael Köhler (Tropical Silviculture and Forest Ecology, Burckhardt-Institute, Gottingen University-Germany), and guest speaker from Bogor Agricultural University namely Dr. Nampiah Sukarno (Teaching staff of Department of Biology).

During the short course, the participants conducted tracking to the forest to observe research site for watershed management, guided by hydrology expert from IPB Faculty of Forestry (Dr. Hendrayanto). Besides that, the participants also conducted observation on wild long tailed macaques in GWUF.

In this occasion, Dr. Tatang Tiryana (Director of Planning and Research of GWUF) gave presentation on sustainable management of GWUF which serves as model for successful small scale forest management.

“We have research group and we went to Gunung Walat University Forest for having workshop on Stable isotopes techniques application in ecohydrology. My group is very amazed with your forest here and we get god food and we had very good time, I can recommended Gunung Walat University Forest as research forest also for you, thank you very much”, said Dr. Michael Kohler, the leader of excursion of Goettingen University.
