Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Gathering of Ecotourism Diploma Program of IPB was held on 19-21 November 2015 in Gunung Walat University Forest, Sukabumi.

The 52nd batch of Ecotourism Diploma Program of IPB students had held gatherings and practices of survival courses in Gunung Walat University Forest. This activity was attended by 63 new first-year students and two lecturers from the Ecotourism Program.

“We have two activities in here. On the first day, we met together as a students’ intimacy meanwhile, for cost savings, on the second-day practice the survival technique courses. So there are two committees to handle different activities at the same time” said the Event Coordinator, Ihsan Kurnia, S Hut, M.Si, when met at the location of the activity.

Ihsan Kurnia said those gathering activities that were attended by seniors and alumni of the Ecotourism Diploma were only to gain friendship and intimacy under one alma mater. Then after the gathering, the new students were taken to the Gunung Walat University Forest area to get jungle survival techniques that must be mastered by new students, especially when in the forest.

“Today is basic jungle survival material that studies about related materials in surviving in the forest, such as making bivouacs, fire, rigging, using compasses, and making traps for animals” he said.

Ihsan Kurnia added that the reason for this practice to be held at Gunung Walat was because the forest area of 359 ha was the property of IPB so we can introduce it to the new students that IPB has a forest that is quite feasible to be used as a field practicum.

“If we calculate the cost, a further location will be more costly. But I think who else will be proud for it if not us, IPB itself?” he concluded.
