Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Training of techniques of land monitoring and land evaluation of ex-mining area, by PT PAQAR (Performa Qualita Mandiri) was conducted on 13 April 2011 in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF).

This training was participated in by 7 participants from Association of Coal Businessmen in Jambi, namely from PT Bukit Asam, PT Adaro, and  PT Berau.  On the othter hand, there were  2 trainers, namely Dr. Ir. Irdika Mansur, MSc.F and  Ir. Priyanto who both came from Faculty of Forestry, IPB.

In this activity, there was also Deputy Director of Program and Marketing of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Dr. Jesus C Fernandez who inspected the location and the training activities.

According to manager assistant of PT PAQAR, Agus Sawal, SP, who acted as chairman of the organizer, the objective of  this training in Gunung Walat University

Forest is to learn the technique of evaluating the success rate of reclamation (reforestation) efforts.  Parameteres being evaluated in this case are those which are related with planting activities, land use arrangement, and vegetation condition.

“Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) is one of the representative models for the training subjects needed by us” added Agus Sawal.

In this opportunity,  Dr Jesus, concerning the history of Gunung Walat forest vegetation gave his comment: “It is amazing to know how IPB has transformed Gunung Walat from grassland into a lustful forest as it is now. The forest is not only catering to educational needs of its students but it has also increased the awareness of the people community and local government officials,  on the importance of protecting the forest to support livelihood and provides good environment for recreation and healthy living.  More power to Gunung Walat !”.
