Training on human resource development on tropical forestry for the Korean Kangwon National University (KNU)

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Training on human resource development on tropical forestry for the Korean Kangwon National University (KNU) students took place on 21-25 December 2011 in the Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF), Sukabumi.

The training in is a cooperation between the IPB Faculty of Forestry with the College of Forestry & Environmental Sciences, KNU Korea.

The training was attended by 6 students from KNU and 10 students from the Faculty of Forestry IPB as a companion. The supervisors are Dr. Leti Sundawati, Dr. Noor Farekhah Haneda, and Dr. Cahyo Wibowo.

“The purpose of this training is to improve the ability of students in the forestry sector,” said Dr. Leti Sundawati as the Supervisor and Commissioner of Foreign Cooperation of the Faculty of Forestry of IPB who is in charge for coordinating various foreign cooperation.

“The training is part of the implementation of the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the Faculty of Forestry of IPB and KNU. Besides, another target is to send 5 students and 2 lecturers of the Faculty of Forestry of IPB to the Korean KNU which was conducted in November 2011 to learn about Korean forestry “, he added.

Before the activities were held in GWUF, some training activities were held at IPB Campus in the form of lectures on ecology, silviculture, biodiversity, conservation, economic policies of forestry, forest protection, agroforestry, social forestry, and industry.

The training practices were carried out in GWUF in order to recognize tropical forests in the real field, identify species of trees and various understorey, observe the type of soil, recognize forest products produced by GWUF, get to know how to tap pine resin and agathis sap, and learn about agroforestry (types and benefits of agroforestry plants).

Besides in the IPB and GWUF campuses, training activities will also be conducted in the Wanagama Educational Forest of UGM in Yogyakarta. The KNU students will learn about Wanagama forest which is different in species from GWUF so that it is more comprehensive.

In this activity, KNU also provides gifts to the Faculty of Forestry in the form of computers and printers as many as 3 sets for practising students with the aim of improving the ability of students in the forestry sector.

“I am very supportive for this activity especially if it can be held in collaboration with other universities so that it opens up insight to students who take part in this program and can spread their knowledge to other friends”, said Dr. Noor Farekhah Haneda as the supervisor for forest protection.
