Practice class of identification and description of seed sources in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF)

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Practice class of identification and description of seed sources has been conducted in GWUF by Forestry Training and Education Center (Indonesian Ministry of Forestry) on 29 November 2012.

This practice class was followed by 30 participants from Forest Plantation Seed Agency which constitutes a Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of Forestry Ministry, and from Regional / Provincial Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) of Provincial Forestry Services of Indonesia. The practice in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) constitutes a part of training for seed sources assessor. Acting as trainer in this session were Dr. Kusdamayanti, Ir. Samsudi, M.Sc and Dede J. Sudrajat, MT.

“The practice class of identification and description of seed sources was conducted in GWUF because in GWUF there are several kinds of forest stands which according to us, could be used as case study for seed sources assessment”, says Dr. Kusdamayanti who acted as trainer in this class.

“At this time, this practice uses 3 stands, namely pine, puspa and agathis. From discussion results after the practice class, we obtain much learning results which vary considerably, and those results become the topic of intense discussion, where the training participant’s ability is sharpened through variability in plots, stand condition, and specific case of each stand”, explained Dr. Kusdamayanti.

“Our impression is that GWUF is complete enough for various topics of forestry training, so that although the specific topic of this training is seed source assessment, many of the training participants inquire also about the resin tapping of agathis and pine which are conducted in GWUF. This implies that besides the achievement of the objective of the seed sources training, the participants also obtain greater insight on forestry knowledge, especially about the so called KHDTK (Forest Territory with Specific Purposes), about Non Timber Forest Products) and about forest education which could all be obtained from this place”, added Dr. Kusdamayanti.

“The participants found good facilities for training site, and they work conveniently today. Hopefully we could always continue our cooperation with GWUF, because up to now, we could learn much in GWUF”, said Dr. Kusdamayanti.
