Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Future Leader Training for students of IPEKA Tomang Senior High School had been conducted on 29 – 31 August 2012 in GWUF (Gunung Walat University Forest).
Future Leader Training is a field practice class which is conducted every year by 12th year students of Christian Senior High School IPEKA Tomang. At this time the field practice class in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) was followed by 68 students of 12th year class of Natural Sciences Department, accompanied by 7 teachers from various subjects, such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, which constitute part of Natural Sciences.
The theme for this Future Leader Training was “Observing the world for the bright future”. This was the second occasion that the Senior High School carried out the training for its students in GWUF. The first occasion was in March 2012.
In this Future Leader Training, the students were guided among others by two Directors of GWUF, namely Dr. Tatang Tiryana (Director of Research and Planning, who gave instruction on carbon sequestration and its measurement), and Dr. Cahyo Wibowo (Director of Forest Resources Development, who gave instructions on biodiversity and biophysical aspect of forest). The instructions for the training participanst were also helped by 8 senior students of Faculty of Forestry of IPB.
The activities of the training participants were among others, climate observation in Digital Meteorology Station existing in GWUF basecamp. The topics include measurements of rainfall, temperature, air humidity, wind speed, and evaporation. There were also practices of tapping the resin of agathis and pine, explanation on the technique of resin tapping, and explanation on product (resin) processing techniques.
Other activities were measurement of carbon dioxide absorption, and oxygen discharge by the trees. This measurement was carried out by measuring diameter and height of the trees, volume of the tree, and biomass of the tree. The participants were encouraged to analyze and estimate the number of trees needed to absorb the carbon emitted by human, plants and animals. There were also activities of plant and animal identification, as well as their characteristics and usefulness.
In this field practice, the training participants also conducted exploration of karst cave which exist inside the GWUF and study the structure, process and history of the cave.
“GWUF is a place for education and training, and in this place, there is a storehouse of information and knowledge for doing research. We have ever come here in the past, and we noticed that there were many things being developed, and research had been directed more appropriately. Here, there was good concept for education and training for the students”, said Drs. A.Agus Priyanto whio was the chief organizer of this training.
