Fieldtrip and Basic Leadership Training of SMPN 1 Kelapanunggal Sukabumi

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Fieldtrip and Basic Leadership Training of SMPN 1 Kelapanunggal Sukabumi took place on 11-12 March 2013 in Gunung Walat University Forest.

This LDK (Basic Leadership Training) activity is the annual routine agenda of the SMPN 1 Kelapanunggal Sukabumi Student Board. For this year, it was held out in Sukabumi Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF). Besides this LDK activity, a field trip was also conducted to add knowledge about forestry because GWUF is an education forest and a natural laboratory that holds a lot of knowledge that can be earned especially for students.

The field trip was attended by 32 student council members and 8 teachers as mentors.

“The purpose of this activity is to train the student board members in how to be a leader, to find information about nature conservation, to foster a sense of love for the forest, and to indirectly make students not become destructive to nature,” said Ono Karwono, S.Pd as the Student Board Supervisor and the Head of Student Affairs Department of SMPN 1 Kelapanunggal.

The activities during the field trip are presentations about the benefits and management of sustainable forest GWUF assistant manager (Adly Rahandi Lubis, S.Hut) and presentation about leadership materials, such as insight into wiyata mandala, manners, character education, student institutional structure, entrepreneurship, and training about problem solving by the teachers of SMPN 1 Kelapanunggal 1.

In addition, physical activities were also carried out to improve students’ psychomotor skill such as morning gymnastics, exercise, tracking to the forest, introduction of tapping methods for pine and agathis sap, introduction of medicinal plants, bird banding, and practicing the nursery of various grains in the region in GWUF guided by GWUF staff.

“The activities here are very useful for students and teachers. Before they are here, they did not understand the importance of forests and the types of plants that could be benefited or not. But after learning about forestry here they get the bits of knowledge after being explained by the GWUF managers” said Ono Karwono who is eventually continuing his master’s degree.

“Hopefully in the future, students can understand more about forest conservation and can be inspired more deeply about forestry science. These expectations are good because the forest condition will very be worrying in the future because forests are exploited by extracting the nature such as gas and oil which damage nature” he said.

“As the future generation, it is a must to understand that forests must remain exist, remain sustainable, and remain useful for the earth. If future generations do not understand the importance of forests, I am sure that the forest in the future will be damaged. I am very appreciative of the success of GWUF in managing the forests” he said.

“We are very thankful to GWUF to provide time and place to hold our activity in here. GWUF is very amazing with excellent service and clear information. Hopefully, we can continue to educate our children about forests. LDK which was discussed is not only about leadership but must gain knowledge from the other side” explained Ono Karwono at GWUF.
