Field practice for ecology subjects (Senior High School Angkasa, Bandung Air Base, Husein Sastranegara

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – Field practice for ecology subjects   (Senior High School Angkasa, Bandung Air Base, Husein Sastranegara) in Gunung Walat University Forest (29 November – 1 December 2010).

This field practice was conducted in GWUF by 114 students of Senior High School from the program of Natural Sciences (Senior High School Angkasa, Bandung Air Base, Husein Sastranegara), accompanied by 7 teachers with various specializations.

Topics of the field practice were acceleration of earth gravitation, air humidity, measurement of soil temperature / air temperature / evaporation, vegetation survey with quadrant method, weed survey with plot method, measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide content, and measurement of specific gravity of soil.

Measurement of soil texture of GWUF would be conducted in the laboratory of soil structure and mechanics of this high school, by taking soil samples from GWUF.

Besides the topic from the school, the GWUF also give special topics such as direct observation of resin tapping from agathis and pine tree, and knowledge on rubber (latex) tapping. There were also practice of planting of sugar palm, conducted by the students and their teachers.

Mr Uhen Adiputra, leader of the group from this Senior High School said: “the objectives of this field practice in this Gunung Walat University Forest were to increase the environmental insight of the students and to show evidence of the presence of synergy between people community and forest, such as that which occurs up to now in GWUF, so that forest environment could provide livelihood for the surrounding people community”.

He added: “Our program which is related with social sciences will be conducted by dispatching students through homestay program in the people community around this forest”.
