A gathering of Director and Staff of the Directorate of Engineering and Environment, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM)

Gunung Walat, Sukabumi – A gathering of Director and Staff of the Directorate of Engineering and Environment, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) was held in Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) on Saturday-Sunday (October 9-10, 2010).

This gathering was held as a farewell of Director of Technical and Environment, M.S Marpaung, as he retired since August 1, 2010. The theme on this agenda was the meeting place for miners and foresters. Both were interrelated because they had the same vision and mission in terms of environmental development.

In this gathering, M.S. Marpaung told a lot about his experience during his time as a staff and after becoming an official in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Many things become fond memories during he led the Directorate of Engineering and Environment.

He advised his former subordinates to continue the struggle he had pioneered and he was always available when asked for help or opinion on the progress of the ministry. M.S Marpaung also apologized for any less pleasing he did to his former subordinates, due to the heavy and solid task burden and solely for the common good.

Because this was a farewell event, the day seemed very sweet, and the feeling of losing the figure of M.S. Marpaung. He was very visionary and disciplined towards his subordinates. The values formed by him would always be remembered in the hearts of all staff.

On the second day, gathering participants were invited to surround the forest while enjoying the beautiful forest nature in the morning. They could also see directly activities in the forest such as sap tapping activities, etc.

“The event is held at Gunung Walat because of not only natural its  supportive atmosphere, because it is far from the urban bustle so that it can be used as a refreshing release daily fatigue, but also in this gathering activity an important mission is implied, namely to gain knowledge directly from the nature of GWUF” said Ir. Sujatmiko, Head of the Sub-Directorate for Environmental Protection for Mineral, Coal and Geothermal Energy who was believed to be the head of the event committee.

On this occasion, GWUF Executive Director, Ir. Budi Prihanto MS, which is also known as Kanjeng Sunan Gunung Walat, gave a presentation on the management of GWUF and discussed the past conditions of GWUF in the form of limestone land and was able to be transformed into dense forests like today.

Forest areas in GWUF were once dry hills and not many trees grew here. Thanks to the perseverance of IPB students who planted trees for the past 60 years, a forested area was created, and the formerly dry land is now covered by trees. As a result, the community around it can take a benefit from the natural resources of the forest.

This event was expected to open the insight and way of thinking of ESDM staff that the barren and dry natural environment is not impossible to be transformed into a useful area. This was in sync with environmental conditions after mining activities (reclamation) which are part of the ESDM Ministry’s working area in managing the environment.

Every mining activity must have an environmental impact that tends to damage nature. That is why we need to find a formula that is sustainable to return the good environment. GWUF is expected to be a real example to inspire people that goodwill, management, and techniques, nature can be turned into better condition.

The benefits that can be taken from this gathering are not only to strengthen the relationship among but also to let the staff see directly in the field that the natural environment is very important for humans so as to foster a sense of love and maintain the environment.
